The town of Shigaraki itself is well off the tourist track but just over an hour from Kyoto. I worked on Oribe style sculptures and functional ware. Furuta Oribe was a revered tea master 400 years ago and introduced more idiosyncratic and relaxed forms of tea ware for court tea ceremonies. He unfortunately fell out with the shogun and was asked to commit harikiri. Oribe style is now associated with a white body clay, freestyle brushwork and a green glaze. See my Instagram feed for more photos @louise.fulton.studiolouisefultonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06588951072499291477noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4930071586124097400.post-10122970460167398592015-05-13T04:57:00.002-07:002015-05-13T04:57:55.149-07:00a life less ordinaryI have recently opened my Etsy shop LouiseFultonStudio online to show smaller art work more suited to retail spaces rather than galleries. Every space, shelf, nook, cranny and alcove had sculpture to look at. These five works were amongst my favourites from the many that I could have picked. The studios are very spacious and the staff and accommodation were excellent. The black incised surfaces related to the embroidered costumes which my grandmother wore when she was a cabaret dancer. The pointy sprigs are based on nipples - a reference to my Hungarian mother. The sculptural shapes are influenced by various forms including WW1 grenades, seedpods and acorns which I came across in Kecskemet at a Cifrapalota exhibition and at the Kecskemet Arboretum.louisefultonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06588951072499291477noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4930071586124097400.post-2022175333209446882014-08-05T14:50:00.000-07:002014-08-05T14:50:54.218-07:00Pieces of Eight, NRCGComing soon to Northern Rivers Community Gallery in Ballina is our new exhibition, 'Pieces of Eight' with Sue Fraser and Ruth Park. Inspired by the exotic history of the Spanish Silver Dollar, we have responded in different ways to the title of the show. In colonial Australia, the Spanish Silver dollar was brought in to replace rum as currency. The dollar was punched out, making both the Holey Dollar and the punch. The donut shape of the Holey Dollar is the same form as the Chinese 'bi disc', also a form of currency in ancient China. This was the starting point for my version of 'Pieces of Eight'. You can see in the image the turquoise glazed bi disc. Our launch event is on Thursday 28th August from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. I'm interested in etymology. I have been learning Hungarian for the past nine months and it has heightened my awareness of my primary tongue, English. In this sculpture, words and numbers combine and transmute into more complex meaning. Unless you grow up in a culture, you can't really recognize the hidden implications in a simple phrase. The piece is called 'Ordinal', and the face is stamped with the word, BORN.louisefultonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06588951072499291477noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4930071586124097400.post-48977105263824397672013-12-03T23:34:00.001-08:002013-12-03T23:34:04.489-08:00Crawl glaze - 1100 CelsiusOne of my favourite glazes is a white crawl which matures between 1080 and 1100 degrees Celsius.

There was a signature piece by Leila Page, a 1.2 metre stylised ceramic figure, sandy coloured with hundreds of daisy-like flowers on the surface. I discussed the piece with a friend, saying that, for me it reminded me of a Linde Ivimey piece. For me it had the same overall look and surface qualities, a basic shape with tiny details. I think it was attractive to me because it was similar to a lot of my own work. My friend didn't see the likeness. If you look at Leila's, Linde's and my work, I think you can see a conversation between artists with a similar aesthetic. When you look at an artwork, are you looking at the materials used or at the overall effect? How do we decide the connection between artworks?
In the end it turned out a bit like an animal with its four legs. It was part of my 'Hide nor Hair' show at the Tanks Arts Centre. I used paperclay as it is so easy to use even if it dries out and you can make very fine attachments. The barnacles on the bottom were made as sprigs then attached. These are some details of drawings that I have been working on at the artist-in-residence house on Collins avenue over the past fortnight. I was thinking about the poignancy of Eliza giving birth on board a lifeboat and the baby being resigned to the deep. I used canavalia rosea vine, also known as Beach bean as the vine most likely to have been used by Eliza to cover her loins.

I will be one of their artist's in residence for July and August. I've been making work based on the story of the heavily pregnant Eliza Fraser who was ship wreaked on the Great Barrier Reef in 1836. She had a baby boy in the lifeboat in front of 11 sailors. The baby died and was buried at sea. At sea for six weeks, they finally landed on Fraser Island (named after her husband, Captain James Fraser). They swapped clothes for food with the indigenous people. Eliza lived with the aboriginal women, helping collect fire wood and food for two months before a party from Moreton Bay came to find the missing ship's crew and passengers. louisefultonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06588951072499291477noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4930071586124097400.post-5563005326887349372013-02-20T03:21:00.001-08:002013-02-20T03:21:16.138-08:00grafton regional art gallery Two of my submissions for Grafton Regional Art Gallery were selected for their Accessible art collection. We packed up The Dragon's Back show a couple of weeks ago. Tweed River Art Gallery is such a beautiful gallery and has such wonderful staff to help with installation etc. This is one of the pieces which sold called Elements of the Dragon. They have potent and auspicious powers over water, bringing rain, causing floods, controlling the tides. The venue for this show lies at the base of Wollumbin ‘the cloud catcher’, a sleeping volcano, a gently breathing dragon. The clouds around it merge, scatter and disappear in an endless cycle over the ancient landscape. Wollumbin is like Fucanglong, the Chinese ‘hidden treasure dragon’, the underworld guardian of precious stones and volcanoes.

Three artists, Sue Fraser, Ruth Park and Louise Fulton have carved, molded, pressed, sculpted, glazed and fired each object. The work has been slowly made by hand using clay with its history far more ancient and widespread that any other art material. The vessels are based on forms built in universal and ancient metaphors of our human origin, the body as container of wishes and desires.

Contemplating on each artwork is a way to touch an existence beyond us like the first puff of opium when the smoker rides ‘the dragon’s back’. The dragon’s breath gives the explorer the raincoat of invisibility, allowing navigation between heaven and earth. Epiphany comes when the metaphorical essence of the artwork is inhaled. We are a container into which art is poured. We understand and experience one kind of thing in terms of another. Like food and water, we eat and drink at the banquet table of art.

Chinese language is critical to understanding Chinese culture. The nature of the artwork is a creative engagement with China not just a reiteration of traditional Chinese forms and techniques. The ongoing technical connection with celadon, porcelain and cobalt brushwork show these artists are China literate, not resorting to pastiche or appropriation.

The horses have dragon energy and dragon speed. The gourds are spawn of the dragon. The clouds are dragon’s breath. The fangs drip with dragon blood. The jade jars might contain the dragon’s hot ginger pickle. The moon jars have the beauty of imperfection and the lack of self-consciousness of a lunar landscape.

In seeking the dragon, the artist must take risks to find the pearl, to gain a benefit, to be granted a wish. The creative process is making connections, linking different concepts until the elusive pursuit of resolution is accomplished. Completely ephemeral, the ideas in ‘The Dragon’s Back’ are suggestive then evaporate like a summer cloud. Each piece has escaped the bonds of the artist and is unconstrained. Each piece tells of possibilities and explores the exotic. Each work is a piece of our culture, generation and time. It is something inexpressible and of the heart, something to hold and protect because it is indefinable.

21 March to 6 May 2012
Tweed River Art Gallery
Mistral Way, Murwillambah, NSW
Open: 10 - 4, Wed - Sunlouisefultonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06588951072499291477noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4930071586124097400.post-39005195510658528662012-03-12T03:11:00.005-07:002012-03-12T03:40:03.536-07:00The Dragon's Back<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 202px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cK3kW6PMdJk/T13SYnGo79I/AAAAAAAAANI/PD73Cw6L030/s320/cloud%2Bcauldron%2Bweb1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5718958422085922770" />louisefultonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06588951072499291477noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4930071586124097400.post-87839375804447594052012-03-01T01:46:00.004-08:002012-03-01T02:03:52.836-08:00The Dragon's Back<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gpuC7bXBpog/T09JMAI9dxI/AAAAAAAAAMw/dsk-R77J_xk/s320/Louise%2BFulton%252C%2BThe%2BDragons%2Bback%252C%2BFang%252C%2Bweb.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5714866922701289234" />
Gearing up for our show, The Dragon's Back at Tweed River Art Gallery opening on Friday 23 March with Sue Fraser and Ruth Park.
